Character's background (their past and present): The Next Generation & William Riker
Character's personality:
Command William Riker, is the First Officer on Starfleet’s flag ship the Enterprise and is affectionately dubbed Number One by its Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Picard himself is self contained, and a man of his books and rules, and Riker could not be more different. Riker is outgoing, charming, and is very willing to take personal risks.
His love for life and it’s challenges are no more evident than in his hobbies. Riker is a keen trombone player, taking part in concerts on the Enterprise. To be a good musician, he is to feel and be able to express joy through his music. When he isn’t taking part in concerts, he takes part in regular poker matches. Data himself has noted that he is an excellent player and bluffer and these bluffing skills have translated into a great ability to negotiate.
Riker’s skills as a first officer are not limited to his negotiations. When the situation calls for it, he is able to rein in his strong emotions, to act as impartial legal advice. Riker is called on to perform a legal service to prove that Data is not a sentient being. Data is a close friend, and Riker is angered that he would be ask to speak against him but without a trial, Data would have been condemned. He presents the arguments to the best of his ability, and to his own great discomfort, he almost wins the case. The case weighs on him, even after Data reassures him that he helped to save his life.
In Data’s case he displayed an ability to adapt to a situation, and this is a skill that applies across all areas of his working life. When Riker leads the away teams, he quickly sizes situations up and adapts his approach and directs the crew accordingly. They’ve managed to deal with cases on a pleasure planet, right up to a hostile environment.
But perhaps one of the best aspects of his personality, is his loyality. Riker will put loyalty to his captain over Starfleet regulations. Onboard the Enterprise, he quickly won Picard’s approval when he openly told him this, and added that he would stand up and tell his captain to stand down if he thought a situation was too dangerous to place a captain in. A couple of times, Riker has been offered his own command and has turned it down to remain with Picard.
Riker does not talk much about his deep routed loyalty, in fact he does try to play down, real emotions and present a charming, easy front. This front is often a hit with the ladies, and many of them through themselves at his feet. He does show a passing interest in them, but he doesn’t connect with as he is still hung up on a previous love - Deanna Troi. They were together before the show started and broke up. When someone shows an interest in her, the easy facade does vanish on occasion, and he makes pointed remarks, displaying signs of jealousy.

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? As an officer onboard the Enterprise, it will be fascinating to see how Riker deals with all of those new arrivals, and manages to keep the Enterprise together along with Picard.
